This month, we’re proud to shine a light on Timi, whose journey into caregiving was shaped by both personal and professional inspiration. With a background in administration and management, Timi took a leap into caregiving after moving to Canada, not just as a career step, but as a heartfelt way to reconnect with purpose, people, and community.
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
I had volunteered in the past, advocating for good health among seniors, and my mum retired as a nurse. After moving to Canada, it was a job I could do, even though my background was in management and administration. Aside from being passionate about caring for people, it was also a way to connect with others as a new immigrant.
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
It will be the first time I had to experience the death of a care receiver. I was so overwhelmed with emotions and the pain of losing them. At that moment, it was a reality that my job is to give them the best that I could and a joy to die with because I might never get a goodbye. I learnt to give my all at every shift.
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
Burnout. It’s hard caring for people without having anyone to care for us. Self-care package should be made available to caregivers at no cost.
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
Acknowledging the place of caregivers among the circle of care regardless of their qualifications.
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
A recognized professional body protected by the law and not seen as a transition role into healthcare.
