This July, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Shalomi, one of our dedicated CareProviders.
Her journey into caregiving started at a young age, surrounded by family in the healthcare field. Inspired by the belief that even small acts of care can make a big difference, Shalomi continues to live that truth every day with the clients she supports.
Her story is a reminder that real care goes beyond tasks, it’s about connection, empathy, and helping others rediscover their strength.
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
“Since I was a child, I grew up around family members in the healthcare field. I often heard stories about how even small acts of care can make a big difference in someone’s life. It inspired me to believe that being compassionate toward others is one of the most meaningful things we can do. I originally trained and worked as an Occupational Therapist, and now, as a Home Support Worker in Canada, I continue to see how kindness and empathy can support both physical and emotional healing. This journey has deepened my understanding of how powerful genuine care can be.”
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
“There are many unforgettable moments in caregiving, but one that always stays with me happens more often than I realize. It’s when I’m helping a client, maybe with getting dressed or walking a few steps and they feel unsure or say, ‘I can’t do this.’ I gently guide them through it, step by step, and when we finally finish, I smile and say, ‘You did it. You did it so well.’ The spark in their eyes, the pride and surprise on their face, it’s a moment of pure human connection. It reminds me how a little encouragement can light that spark. These are the moments that make me feel deeply grateful to do what I do.”
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
“Caregiving can be physically and emotionally demanding. Caregivers often feel exhausted and underrecognized. At times, they’re unfairly held responsible in difficult situations, even when they face mistreatment. Supporting them through regular check-ins, mental health resources, and a respectful work culture can make a big difference.”
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
“By sharing caregiver’s full stories. Their struggles, achievements, and journeys. When people understand the emotional and physical strength it takes, they gain more respect for the role. Giving caregivers the recognition and appreciation they truly deserve is key to raising awareness.”
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
“I myself an internationally trained healthcare provider I feel In the future, I would love to see more support for internationally trained caregivers. With the current shortage in the healthcare system, helping these professionals with proper licensing, credential recognition, and continued training can bring much needed relief. Many of them already have valuable experience, and with the right support, they can contribute meaningfully to our care teams.”
