Employee Spotlight: August 2025

Every caregiver has a story, and this month we’re excited to share Gerily’s. What started as just a pathway opportunity for her has now turned into a passion. Her journey shows us that caregiving is more than a role, it’s about love, patience, and finding joy in giving back.

Employee Spotlight

What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?

“At first it was just a pathway opportunity for me, but day by day it grows on me. I find myself looking forward to seeing every client, and I realized that I truly have the passion of taking care of our elderly, something I thought I didn’t have before. Over time, I discovered that caregiving is not just about doing tasks, but about building connections, listening to their stories, and being present in moments that matter. It has become my way of giving back, and it gives me a deep sense of happiness and fulfilment knowing that I am making a difference in someone’s life.”

Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?

“The moment that really hits me is when I realized that not all elderly is well taken care of. I’m crying inside when I see a client who is not as lucky as my other clients, and it breaks my heart to know that some elders don’t receive the same love and care they truly deserve. That moment made me reflect and strengthened my commitment to this work. It made me wish and pray that every old person is well loved, respected, and treated with dignity until the very end of their journey.”

What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?

“As a new caregiver, I haven’t yet experienced the full extent of physical and emotional exhaustion, but I think it’s one of the biggest struggles of many caregivers I’ve met. Long hours, emotional attachment, and the physical demands of the role can take a toll. That’s why support is so important. Simple acts like showing appreciation, recognizing their hard work, and letting caregivers know they are valued make a big difference. On a larger scale, offering fair wages, better caregiver packages, and resources for mental health and wellness can uplift caregivers’ morale and help them continue giving the best care possible.”

How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?

“The society is already aware of the vital role of caregivers in the community, but I believe it needs stronger implementation of public awareness. People need to see that caregivers are not only a support system, but also an essential part of the mainstream health system here in Canada. Caregivers are the bridge between families and healthcare, providing comfort, safety, and dignity to those who need it most. Sharing more stories, highlighting real experiences, and giving caregivers visibility in conversations about health will help people truly understand the impact of our role.”

What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?

“I want the society to improve the way they look at caregivers like us, because caregiving isn’t just wiping someone’s bottom, it’s far more meaningful than that. Caregiving is rooted in compassion, patience, and the genuine desire to help others. When society begins to see it in that light, caregivers will be valued for the dignity and joy they bring to people’s lives. For me, the desire to help others is a higher level of life satisfaction and fulfilment, and I hope the future of caregiving reflects the respect, recognition, and support that caregiver truly deserve.”
