Karl’s caregiving story began when he came to Canada as an international student. At first, it was simply a job but it quickly grew into something much more meaningful.
Through caring for patients with different needs and personalities, Karl learned to be more patient, more understanding, and more resilient. As he puts it, “This job exposed me to different cases of patients and made my perspective better and wider when it comes to dealing with different characters of patients and scenarios.”
What made you become a caregiver, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?
“I started to enter the job of caregiving when I came here to Canada as an international student. This job exposed me to different cases of patients and made my perspective better and wider when it comes to becoming more patient when it comes to dealing with different characters of patients and scenarios.”
Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?
“Too many moments to share, but I am also respecting my patients’ privacy. But what those moments became powerful is it increases my critical think more, especially in handling geriatric patients.”
What are the biggest challenges caregivers face, and how can we support them better?
“Caregivers handle different patients and there are also different characters to deal with. Sometimes it affects our mental health because we’re still human, and sometimes we can’t avoid getting affected by situations and getting burnt out because it feels like no one appreciates our service. So it’s also better to check on the caregivers’ mental health and a program for meditation maybe could help.”
How can we make people more aware of the crucial role caregivers play in society?
“Caregiving jobs are already known. Posting online the caregiver’s job description and videos about it would help people to be more aware of how crucial it is to be a caregiver. Because most people are now focusing on social media, I think this platform would help us caregivers to become more known and appreciated.”
What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?
“I am expecting improvements when it comes to opportunities and more people will think of taking up caregiving courses, not because of the income, but because they love to serve other people, especially geriatric patients.”
