Employee Spotlight

What made you become a care provider, and how has it changed your view of caring for others?

My previous role as a nursing aide provided me with valuable experience in direct patient care, particularly in supporting the elderly. This experience profoundly shaped my perspective on caregiving, expanding my understanding and transforming me both professionally and personally. I developed strong listening skills and became more attentive to the emotional and physical needs of those under my care. I learned to approach each individual with thoughtfulness, compassion, and a proactive mindset—always anticipating their needs to ensure their safety and comfort. Even a simple “thank you” from a patient reinforced the meaningful impact of my work. Caring for others has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of being a healthcare professional.

Can you share a powerful moment from your caregiving experience?

It is a very fulfilling experience when you build trust and rapport with your client and their family members. At first, they might see you as just another caregiver—someone who’s there to do a job, maybe help with cleaning, cooking, or personal care. But when you show up every day with consistency, when you treat them with respect and kindness, something changes. They start to open up. They tell you stories. They ask about your day. And slowly, you’re no longer just “the worker” or “the cleaning lady”—you become someone they rely on, someone they welcome like family.

I’ve experienced that shift, and it’s one of the most meaningful parts of this job. When a client starts to trust you, when their family thanks you not just for the work you do, but for the way you care—that’s when you feel the difference you’re making. It’s not always easy, but those moments remind me why I love being a caregiver. It’s about connection. And when that connection is real, it stays with you.

What are the biggest challenges care providers face, and how can we support them better?

The biggest obstacle I have faced is managing a person’s challenging behavior. When you’re alone assisting with their activities of daily living, you might unexpectedly get hurt physically or emotionally. It was incredibly difficult, but it taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and understanding the underlying causes of such behaviors. Instead of letting the experience discourage me, I learned de-escalation techniques, and reminded myself to see the person behind the behavior. These experiences strengthened my resilience and deepened my commitment to compassionate care.

How can we make people more aware of the crucial role care providers play in society?

I believe that people in the community today are becoming more aware of the vital role caregivers play in society. The growing trend of an aging population has made this role more visible and essential than ever before. As more families face the realities of caring for elderly loved ones, there is a deeper appreciation for the physical, emotional, and mental demands of caregiving. Government initiatives and public health campaigns have also contributed to raising awareness, offering support programs and resources that recognize the contributions of caregivers. This shift in perception not only validates the work we do but also an inspiration to others.

What improvements would you like to see in caregiving in the future?

I would like to see more programs available that support caregivers in terms of their overall well-being—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Caregiving can be deeply rewarding, but it is also demanding and often isolating. Many caregivers experience burnout due to long hours, emotional stress, and the lack of formal support. That’s why it is essential to have programs focused on their health, access to respite care, mental health services, and financial assistance when needed.
